WHERE GOOD FRIENDS MEET

The sound of laughter wraps its welcoming arms around the weary student, the hungry business person, and the local couple out for a quick bite of lunch or the stray traveler in off the street.  They all saunter in over the lustrous floors, gleaming like a 1950s diner rather than a bar.  But it adds to the engaging atmosphere in a way that cannot be ignored.   All these people are guided by the beacon that this is “Where Good Friends Meet”.  And Jack and Dan’s Bar and Grill live by that motto.

While the clientele may vary from day to day, time of day, or sporting event season, the draw to Jack and Dan’s is that it offers of a sense of inclusion and a sense of belonging.  Much of this comes from tradition.  Jack and Dan’s is a Gonzaga tradition. Owned by two Gonzaga alumni, and purchased from another, it is an establishment that has been a draw for students whose parents frequented Jack and Dan’s when they were students. Jack and Dan’s is heritage, it is generational, and it is camaraderie.   In essence, it is community.

COMMUNITY
Jack and Dan’s IS community for many reasons.  Jack and Dan’s represents community with its continued involvement and support of the Gonzaga community and the people within it. They welcome all customers and reach out into their neighborhood to support sports teams.  This year, Jack and Dan’s sponsor a Jack and Jill Baseball team and a hockey team. They also employ Gonzaga students as bartenders, wait staff, and kitchen help.

Whitney works at Gonzaga, and she and her colleagues hold meetings at Jack and Dan’s about twice a week.  Any group can just meet at the Bar and Grill or reserve the back room for meetings. During the fall and spring semesters, a group called ‘Theology on Tap’ meets once a week for lessons and discussion… and beer.

TRADITION
The business originally began in 1932, and operated as “Louie’s Snappie Service” and “Joey’s” under several different owners. In 1961, Jack Stockton and Dan Crowley III bought Joey’s, and finally changed the name to Jack and Dan’s in 1975. In 1991, Jeff (JC) Condill bought Dan’s share, and in 2006 Kevin MacDonald bought Jack’s share, and now Jeff and Kevin run the place.

The fact that Jeff and Kevin are also both Gonzaga Alums adds to that rich tradition and community flavor.  Jeff and Kevin believe that the business operate with “no gimmicks, no frills.  Just good food, good service and good value,” which makes people feel like they belong.  Their passion and exuberance in the business translates into a friendly work environment and as a result, adds to that friendly charm that keeps the patrons coming back for more!

ATMOSPHERE

Suzanne and Natasha, frequent patrons of this local hot spot, love Jack and Dan’s because it’s close to where they work. They say that they come not only for the food, but because the Jack and Dan’s employees “make you feel at home – they treat you like they know you.” Suzanne and Natasha love to come to watch basketball games as well.

Heidi Heath came to Jack and Dan’s to celebrate her birthday. She said, “My friends wanted to take me out, and I had a choice of any restaurant in Spokane, and I chose Jack and Dan’s!”
